Are You Afraid? GOOD!!!

Is It Possible to Use Fear to Your Advantage?

by Keith Pascal

Fear is not bad.

Freezing in the face of fear isn't very desirable. But fear alone, is OK.

What if I told you that you need some adrenaline to be able to defend yourself at your peak level?

Create a reality for yourself where lack of adrenaline in a fight could equal a slow response on your part.

If someone approaches you in a threatening manner, and your body stiffens in fear ... good!

Your body is telling your brain to get 'on guard.' (not physically taking a fighting stance -- don't escalate the situation or clue your attacker that you know how to defend yourself.)

Feel the fear?

Take a step away. Talk to 'your threat' from a distance.

If one step isn't enough ... talk to your menacer from across the parking lot.

Is your fear telling you to run away? Can you run away?

If so, run!!! Leave! Avoid the fight?

If you are going to have to fight, embrace your fear. Analyze it.

Are your lips dry? (Moisten them.)

Are you breathing shallowly? (Take a few slow, deep breaths.)

Are your hands clammy and cold? (Stick them under your arm pits ... wait! You can't defend yourself with your hands trapped under your own arms :-)

Maybe More Self Defense Training?

If you are too afraid even to move ... then you need more training. You need practical training that puts a little fear into you. It's better to be numbed by fear in the class than out on the street.

Keep in mind, I look within for a modicum of fear, now and then.

Do I feel the fear inside? Good -- it means I am aware and that my body is getting ready to react.

I once counseled a student ....

"Calm yourself to a functioning level by studying the situation. Think strategy. See if a tactic or two might apply to this situation."

Do we need to talk about fear some more? Was this enough?
